Searching on Google: How Dangerous Can It Be?

When performing a search on Google, it’s possible to automatically click on the options that appear in the first results. However, according to cybersecurity experts, this reflex action can be counterproductive, if necessary, attention is not paid; among the first results, you can find fake sites that pose as legitimate to try to steal sensitive data or induce the download of some type of malware.

Cybercriminals take advantage of the management of search engine algorithms, mainly through ads that direct malicious sites. Thus, they appear in sponsored search results or positioned on the first page.

The objective of cybercriminals is to impersonate a brand or recognized entity. This brand is also a victim of deception when its name is used to make victims believe it is a legitimate site.

As an example of these scams, there is the case of ChatGPT, and although it may seem unbelievable, the form of deception is quite simple: it simulates being the real site (using logos of companies that use the real service to give a touch of veracity to the fake page) and making users fall into the trap, taking advantage of the growing popularity of the chatbot.

What to do to avoid falling into these scams? Well, Google itself gives these simple recommendations:

  1. Stay calm: Scams are usually designed to create a sense of urgency. Take your time to ask questions and think carefully.
  2. Analyze in detail: Investigate to verify the information you have received. Does what they are telling you make sense
  3. Stop! Don’t send it: No reputable person or organization will ask you to make a payment or provide personal information suddenly.
